The Chocolate Works Care Village in York is a nurse led residential, nursing and dementia care community with an unrivalled location, superb facilities and a dedicated, experienced team of clinical and care staff. With over 50 years of experience in the care industry, owners Springfield Healthcare are expertly placed to deliver first class care in this unique, historic building. The Chocolate Works has a wonderful atmosphere based around its thriving atrium incorporating Albert’s Café, the Duke of York pub, sweet shop, cinema, hairdresser, gym and spa suite. All of our facilities are fully accessible to residents and their visitors and offer opportunities to relax, socialise and live life to the full.
Furthermore, there’s a whole team of qualified and experienced staff providing person-centered care to help residents live life as independently as possible whether they have complex care needs or simply need a little extra day to day support.

A warm welcome to Springfield Carehome Garforth from me, my name is Graeme Lee and I am the Group CEO of Springfield Healthcare.
The care home that you are about to see on this virtual tour is actually where I grew up although it’s changed a lot since mum and dad opened the doors in 1967. My mum was a nurse, dad looked after the business side of things and I took over the business in 1994 after we lost my mum to cancer. We have grown substantially since then but my own experiences of living amongst older people and seeing how vulnerable they are has always driven me to deliver exceptionally high standards of care in really lovely surroundings – places where our residents feel safe and at home – and their relatives enjoy peace of mind.
I hope that when you have seen our virtual tour you will want to come and see us in reality, to talk to my team about how we can help you. If you have any questions at all please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us.
Our bedrooms come furnished as standard with comfortable bed, a bedside cabinet for your smaller things, chest of drawers, wardrobe and a relaxing chair for sitting. You need only bring the minimum with you, but if you’d like some creature comforts from your own home that’s fine with us. Your room is your space, so feel to free to bring what makes you feel at home. We politely ask that any soft furniture is brand new and meets fire regulations for the safety of all.
On arrival you’ll receive a basket of complimentary items to help you settle in and a copy of our “Welcome to Springfield” brochure containing everything you might need to know from mealtimes to information about visiting and everything in between.
Our team of dedicated wellbeing staff deliver a varied programme of activities seven days a week with something for everyone. From boardgames and colouring, gardening and birdwatching to ping-pong, talks and visits by local schoolchildren with the odd afternoon of karaoke fun thrown in too! Our aim is to make sure that our residents are leading happy and fulfilled lives in safe surroundings.
At Springfield we pride ourselves on offering a varied menu of delicious, nutritious and familiar meals. We review our menus regularly with our residents and our Head of Hospitality gives regular training to staff alongside the wellbeing team to help make mealtimes enjoyable. The social aspect of eating and marking occasions with homemade cakes and treats for all is a very special part of life at Springfield.”

Sanctuary Spa
We all need a little pampering from time to time! Our gorgeous spa houses our hair salon which is visited several times a week by our professional hairdresser, spa bathroom and nail bar.
Sweet Shop
A nod to the heritage of our building and a delight for young and old alike! Many of our residents enjoy a trip to our very own sweet shop with or without grandchildren as do the pupils from our local school who visit us from different year groups on Fridays to take part in a range of activities – perhaps reading to our residents, playing a game or doing a jigsaw together. It’s a real highlight of our week. Sadly these visits are currently suspended due to visiting restrictions.
Pharmacy
Tucked in the corner is our own pharmacy, safely housing medication for residents. Of course it’s not open to residents or visitors (strictly authorised staff only) but incorporating the look and feel of an old fashioned pharmacy into our atrium is just another small part of the overall charm of the Chocolate Works Care Village.
Alberts Café
A cosy corner of the atrium where a selection of teas and coffees, light bites, cakes and sweet treats are available to residents and their visitors.
Fitness Rooms
With an impressive range of equipment our fitness rooms are regularly used by many of our residents to maintain movement and flexibility. Getting out and about isn’t always possible with the British weather so having an alternative is an essential for many. Whenever possible we also run group exercise/mobility classes encouraging and adapting participation wherever possible. Exercise is so good for us in so many ways!
